Mike Ness Cancer Update: Mike Ness was diagnosed with stage-1 tonsil cancer, underwent surgery, then radiation and chemo, and now is working on speech and swallowing recovery.
Diagnosis Begun During Recordings
He found out about cancer while recording his band’s new album. He said he was laying down tracks when doctors called him. The very next day, he paused recording and prepared for treatment.
Surgery & Treatment Steps
First, surgical removal of the tumor was done. After a recovery period, he began radiation therapy. Alongside radiation, he also took a milder form of chemotherapy for about six weeks.
Challenges in Recovery
Because the cancer was in his throat area, this treatment affected his voice, swallowing, and speech. He has had to relearn to swallow and gradually rebuild strength in his voice. He says his voice still feels weak and speech comes slowly.
Effect on Album & Tours
The album he was working on was put on hold. Vocal tracks and finishing touches were delayed until his voice is stronger. Also, concerts and tours were postponed or canceled until he recovers more.
Current Progress
He reports he is improving and pushing through rehab. Speech is gradually improving. He is hopeful to return to performing once he regains strength.
