The attack took place in Southall Park, West London, where CCTV footage captured Mohamed Iidow prowling the area late at night, searching for a potential victim.
The footage showed Natalie Shotter initially sitting on a park bench with another person before Iidow first walked past them, left the park in his car, and then returned later.
When Iidow came back, he found Shotter unconscious on the bench and proceeded to assault her for over 15 minutes, manipulating her unresponsive body in different positions during the attack that ultimately led to her death through cardiac arrest.
Victim Natalie Shotter: A Mother of Three
Natalie Shotter, 37, was described by her mother as a “beautiful soul” who devoted herself to raising her three children, aged between 5 and 19.
Her family remembers her as the “kindest girl” who consistently helped others, with her mother highlighting her dedication as a “great mum” to her children.
On the night of July 17, 2021, Shotter had been enjoying a night out before the tragic incident that led to her being discovered by a passerby early the next morning in Southall Park.
CCTV Evidence and Investigation
Security footage from Southall Park revealed the methodical nature of the attack, showing Iidow initially observing Shotter with another person before returning to the park later that night.
The investigation found DNA evidence linking Iidow to the crime, with swabs taken from the victim’s mouth matching samples collected from the attacker.
When arrested at his home on August 4, 2021, Iidow claimed the encounter was consensual, but prosecutor Alison Morgan KC presented evidence showing the victim had been “deeply unconscious” and unable to consent during the 15-minute assault captured on camera.
Medical Cause of Death and Prosecution’s Case
The prosecution, led by Alison Morgan KC, established that Natalie Shotter died from a heart attack caused by repeated sexual assault while she was unconscious on the park bench.
The court heard this was the first recorded case where overstimulation of nerves at the back of the throat had triggered a fatal cardiac arrest, though the judge noted there was a ‘high risk’ of serious harm from such actions.
The prosecution emphasized that Shotter was alive but deeply unconscious during the attack, with Morgan KC stating, “He was having sex with someone he knew was alive but was deeply unconscious and therefore he was raping her.”
Mother’s Emotional Statement in Court
Dr. Cas Shotter Weetman, an NHS cardiology practitioner and mother of the victim, delivered a powerful statement describing the trauma of having to watch video evidence of her daughter’s assault.
“No mother should ever have to see that,” she stated, expressing her anger that her daughter, who was simply enjoying a night out, fell victim to a predator in a public space.
Dr. Weetman called for urgent action against violence targeting women, stating that “no woman should have to fear going to a park and sitting on a bench,” while emphasizing that hearing the medical evidence of how her daughter died had devastated their family.
Court Verdict and Sentencing
Judge Richard Marks KC handed down a life sentence to Mohamed Iidow for the rape and manslaughter of Natalie Shotter, with a minimum term of 10 years and eight months.
In delivering the sentence, the judge condemned Iidow’s actions as “wicked and utterly reckless,” highlighting how he took advantage of a vulnerable and unconscious victim.
